Since 1993, Mid-Michigan Recycling (MMR) has been working to provide wood-waste chips, a bio-mass fuel, to the Genesee Power Station (GPS). As the wood chip infrastructure matured and a higher value markets developed MMR went back to basics and began researching other bio-mass and alternative waste materials that could be burned by GPS in an environmentally responsible manner while providing sustainable electrical energy to meet the needs of residents and industry in Southeast Michigan.
The Genesee Power Station was designed and built in the early 1990’s to utilize alternative and renewable fuels to produce electricity while providing the environmental benefit of offsetting the need for fossil fuels for electricity generation, reduction of land filling, and reduction of greenhouse gas production.
Today, MMR is working with industrial clients, universities, state agencies, recycling companies, landfills, etc. to identify alternative/renewable materials that can be handled and burned in an environmentally responsible manner. Prior to consideration all such materials must be sampled, tested and analyzed to insure safety to the environment. Additionally, any material GPS seeks to burn must be further analyzed and approved by the Michigan Department of Environment Quality.
MMR’s alternative/renewable fuel program provides opportunity for Michigan citizens and businesses to become good stewards of the environment which can provide the following benefits:
- - Preserving Michigan’s natural resources.
- - Reducing their respective carbon footprint.
- - Extending the life of landfills for materials that require burial.
- - Displacement of fossil fuels required for the generation of heat and electricity.
- - Reduction of greenhouse gases generated from landfills and energy production.
If you or the company you work for landfills waste products that may have a heating value and are not toxic to burn, please call MMR to review the potential for recycling that material into green electricity for use by the people and businesses of Michigan.
